Borgio
Verezzi is the Mediterranean highlight of the
Riviera di Ponente, astounding visitors for its
immense natural and architectural beauty. Easily
reachable by train or car, it stands between the
Caprazoppa promontory (to the east, direction
finale) and the coastal plain of Pietra, Loano,
Borghetto Santo Spirito. This 2,300-inhabitant
centre (endowed with an efficient tourist
information point) boasts a pleasant seashore,
rich in well-equipped stabilimenti balneari.
Tuesday is market - and bargain – day.
The past of this peaceful resort thrives with
military fights, evangelisations and trades. The
fierce Ingauni having submitted to Roman Lucio
Emilio Paolo, the place later enjoyed (both
culturally and economically) the Benedictine
influence of the powerful abbey of San Pietro in
Vara tella
(the destination of an intriguing excursion).
Conquered by the Del Carretto household, it
finally came into the Genoese sphere of
influence. Saracen raids being dreadful (and
continuous), people escaped to the hills – and
defensive towers were built.
Holiday in Borgio Verezzi means a carousel of
emotions and experiences, thanks to an
uncontaminated environment (sea, olive groves,
orchards, vineyards, almond trees its markers)
and to numberless cultural and historical
resources. Borgio, the coastal centre, offers
the enchantment of its carruggi coiling up to
the church of San Pietro (18th century).
Verezzi, high on the mountain (200 metres a.s.l.)
provides breathtaking views at the end of a
five-minute drive along hairpin bends. Secluded
and magic, this atmospheric village is the
setting of
a renowned Theatre Festival: since 1967, in fact,
actors of international repute (Giorgio
Albertazzi, Giulio Boselli, Gianrico Tedeschi,
Elisabetta Pozzi only to cite a few) have been
treading the parvis of Piazza Sant’Agostino.
Last but not least, do not miss a visit to the
caves of the Rio Valdemino, discovered in 1933
by three local young people who affixed their
signature on the rock. A guided 700-metre
itinerary leads to a paradise of stalagmites and
stalactites, complete with the remains of
Pleistocene fauna. |
